战舰随着波浪摇晃不休，风从海面猎猎吹来，如一只有力的大手摇晃着桅杆。
威廉有些担忧地抬头张望，查尔斯已经消失在层层叠叠的风帆之间。
从他刚才那个笨手笨脚的架势来看，情况就非常不妙。威廉敢肯定，除了怕水，那家伙一定还恐高。
收帆是一件相当危险的工作。能借助风力驱动大船的风帆密度极高、质量也十分惊人，单凭个人的一把子力气根本没法收拾，一般都需要多人配合工作。强风吹袭之下，就连有经验的水手都常常发生意外，更不要说连正儿八经出海经验都没几次的旱鸭子——“旱鸭子”是老兵们对新手的称呼，不得不承认它用在查尔斯身上简直没法更贴切了。
这个危险的活计被老乔派给了查尔斯，威廉当时就愤怒地指责他这是谋杀。可倒了大霉的事主自己反而出面打圆场，一口把这个艰巨的任务答应下来，倒把威廉噎得半天说不出话。
其实威廉很清楚，查尔斯想努力证明自己。他老是强迫自己去做一些危险的工作，哪怕最终的表现多半不尽如人意，他也总要表现得这么好强。就像他偷偷学游泳的事。
“踩稳踏索！从迎风面爬！”
威廉将双手拢在嘴上，冲头顶大喊。
他说晚了。
查尔斯慌张的声音从上面传来，同时还伴随着老水手们的惊呼和怒骂。
